Frugal Recipe: DIY Slowcooker Yogurt

Frugal Recipe: DIY Slowcooker Yogurt

May 29, 2018

A month ago, I discovered that you could actually make yogurt with a slow cooker aka crock pot. Yes. Whaaaaaaaat?? And recently I just scored some pretty cheap milk so I thought, why not make some yogurt again?

Yogurt (especially Greek) is really expensive here, especially when you need a lot of it to make a dish. One 140g Greek yogurt can cost me RM7+. The total cost of the ingredients for today’s project was around RM20 (About 5 Dollars). And I basically made about RM70 (17 Dollars) worth of Greek yogurt! I assume it would be cheaper for just plain yogurt. You can make fruit salad with yogurt, eat it with some fruits for breakfast, make sauces, bake with it or make pancakes with it as well as smoothies. This is a really great frugal option..especially for families!

Ingredients:

2 litres of milk

1 plain yogurt 140g

Time (the most ingredient)

Take note that you should use plain yogurt instead of flavoured ones. It might not work well. Choose your favourite yogurt as the starter because you DIY yogurt will take the flavour of the starter yogurt. Oh, You will also need a bath towel on standby, this is for the last step. Your DIY yogurt doesn’t take that much effort to make but the waiting time between steps are long so you might want to do this on a weekend between chores.

Directions:

  1. Heat the milk in a crockpot for 2.5 hours.

  2. Once the 2.5 hours are up, turn it off, unplug it and let it sit undisturbed for 3 hours. Do not open the lid!

  3. Once the 3 hours are up, you need to add in the starter aka your yogurt to start the fermentation process. In a bowl, stir the yogurt with some warm milk until smooth then pour back the mixture into the pot. Mix well.

  4. Cover it up with a bath towel and let it grow! You can leave overnight or at least for 8 hours. Again, do not disturb or open the towel etc. Just leave it be. Once its done, you will have perfectly good yogurt!
