Monthly Expenses Breakdown: April 2020

Woohoo..spent less than RM3k this month! I shouldn’t be so happy because total income also went down but I am grateful for being able to spend less right now. As expected, my personal expenses significantly reduced this April due to our Movement Control Order (MCO) - less shopping, having to send less money back home, no spending on miscellaneous things and totally no transportation cost. I spent my free time in April to deep clean my apartment, re-organise my stuff, reading, filming and editing more videos, working on my campaigns, gardening and more..

Now that I’ve mentioned gardening, I would like to announce that I have successfully harvested my limau kasturi for the first time after more than 2 years. Look at that!! Aren’t they beautiful? What an amazing feeling.

Fixed Expenses (RM1416.66)

I still had to pay all my fixed expenses in full.. except for the water bill, which has reduced from the fixed amount of RM36 to RM15. But one exciting thing about April was that I managed to survive without Netflix and Amazon (YAS)! I unsubscribed from Amazon back in February and I made the decision to unsubscribe from Netflix this month, which is why my fixed expenses are a little lesser than usual. I’m working from home and I just felt like I’ve been spending too much time on my devices..I am all too aware that I’m always moving from one device to the other, from working on the laptop 8 hours a day to watching Netflix & Youtube for another 4 hours (while also playing with my phone) before going to bed. Getting rid of Netflix for this month definitely gave me back the hours I needed.

Donation (RM500.00)

Still had to support the family back home even though the amount is less than before and some of the amount here was used to donate to COVID-19 relief funds. As we enter the 4th phase of MCO, it is getting harder and harder for a lot of people to earn a living and provide food for the table. I hope that things will get better soon. Donate here if you want to help out..even RM10 makes a difference.

Groceries + Eating Out (RM469.95 + RM69.70)

I spent RM539.65 on food in April and this amount is considered a ‘normal’ amount I guess. I made a few delicious meals and I started creating mealprep videos as well (mostly because it will be easier for me to pass recipes to people when they ask). I think I can do better next month because I spent A LOT on snacks recently. So much so that I’m actually shook that I didn’t even gain weight from all the snacking. Good thing I saved my receipts so here is a list of the snacks with prices from my grocery haul, listed from most expensive to least expensive:

  • 2 Haagen-Dazs Salted Caramel (RM21.20)

  • Mini Magnums Pack of 6 (RM14.00)

  • Haagen-Dazs Chocolate (RM10.60)

  • Nougatelli Cookies (RM10.40)

  • Fox Cookies (RM8.90)

  • Toblerone Chocolate (RM8.50)

  • Mango Passionfruit Yogurt (RM8.00)

  • 2 Wise Potato Chips (RM6.00)

  • Nescafe Mocha (RM3.10)

  • Oreo (RM2.20)

  • Sliced Fruitcake (RM0.90)

The cost of my snacks from my grocery alone was RM93.80!! I could have spent only RM376.95 on groceries if it weren’t for my name brand snacks like Haagen-Dazs or Magnum. Next month, I will TRY to reduce to one snack per week and not buy branded ice-cream (Update: Success!! Read here).

My ‘Eating Out’ was basically take away from Family Mart..I just had a craving for many things towards the end of April so I just decided to get a bunch of stuff and it cost me RM69.70. Basically more junk food but the good thing is that I filmed it because..might as well mukbang lol.

Shopping (RM174.78)

Even with the MCO happening, I still managed to do a little online shopping earlier in April..just because Zalora. I bought 2 office tops as I was looking to replace 2 of my office tops that tore a few months before and had to throw out *sads*. Sadly, I am having doubts about the items I bought and I cannot be bothered to return them because I don’t feel like going to the post office. I don’t even know why I bought it, it’s not like I’m going to the office everyday now.

That’s about it for my blog. By the way..did you notice my website’s new look? This is also what I’ve been up to while staying at home. I hope that it is easy to navigate now, especially on mobile. Wix has a ‘new blog’ feature so I decided to transfer my ‘old blog’ to this. One thing is that you need to sign up to create an account in my website’s ‘blog community’ to comment. Yeah..don’t bother about that. You can just read and go.
